The more I explore music in this modern era (2025), the less I think there are "niche" finds. Whether it's "parallel evolution" or "influenced by the same", even lesser known bands have siblings. Anyway, maybe Earth Lift isn't lesser known to others, but it was to me. But there is a reason a friend brought it to my attention.
Self-described as "an Art-Rock/Jazz-Fusion band that started back in 2009 to make music that challenges us — complex, spontaneous". And that does fit. Not necessarily that genre in my head. Not enough psychedelic aspects, and more intellectual (even in their spontaneousness) than visceral. But they are making a place in my collection.
After listening for the first time, I realized they need more attention. After a while, I'm like wow, they're mixing the stylings of Bela Fleck and Dream Theater at the same time! As I become more familiar with their interlocking patterns, I do have to say I want more "here's differing views on the same thing" in addition to "these sound cool together". I like "Fish of a Feather" not only because the title is cool and it's an interesting, fun, smooth juxtaposition. But because it has both of those qualities. I want more of that, of complex spontaneous expressions that somehow coincide. Like "here is how an amoeba eats" or "here are moments before and after an explosion".
"When The Levee Breaks" is a cool cover. Another favorite track is "The Dimented Waltz"; the name fits the song. Their self-titled song, Earth Lift, is also a fun ride.
